Cultural dynamics in international teams can make or break your business success. Miscommunications, delays, and frustrations often come from unseen cultural differences—impacting your results and team effectiveness.

N

Some cultures are open and direct in their communication.

N

Others deliver messages between the lines.

N

In some teams, every idea is challenged; how about …? What if? …

N

In others, people hesitate to speak up.

N

Some prefer collaborative decision-making; let’s sit down and discuss as a team.

N

others wait for leadership to decide; It’s up to you, I would be happy to.

There where people grow up, they learn what is the ‘right’ way business is done.
How you interact with others and how to behave in different business settings.

There is no wrong or right way of doing things, but depending on your cultural reference, we all have different preferences on how things should be done.

The challenge? Everyone brings that different preference to the workplace. And we have no clue on how everyone’s preferences differ. Which is why we assume, we guess, we do our best, but in the end, we interpret things: wrong.

Not understanding these differences causes miscommunications, misunderstandings and frustration. Most of all, they cause delays in your business operations and booking results.

Like Ben, who is Dutch and gave his British colleague feedback the Dutch way. Result? Barry took it personally, thought Ben didn’t like him, never asked for feedback again and tried his best to avoid Ben as much as possible.

When Ben got promoted to become the manager of the team, Barry resigned.
Now, could this have been avoided? Yes.
Was it Ben’s fault? No entirely.

Both Ben and Barry were unaware.
Which is why Barry interpreted Ben’s feedback in the British context and Ben was unable to adjust.

A highly unfortunate situation, but it taught the organization a (expensive) lesson.

Knowing the root cause of the challenges alone is not enough to overcome them.
It’s time to stop leaving money, time, and opportunities on the table.
